Halifax and Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada

It's fun to look at a map and try to imagine what the road will be like. The south eastern shore of Nova Scotia looks like it's been shredded by the claws of a bear, and the thin yellow line of road winds in and out along the jagged coastline past towns with crazy names like Ecum Secum.

With a stop needed before we'd make it to Halifax, we routed for this coast and found a beautiful stretch of highway lined by gray boulders trimmed with a rich brown-yellow seaweed. The first campground option included the words "and Trailer Park" in its name. Pass. The second looked like an abandoned summer camp where even the local sheriff is too scared to go. We slowed briefly and then moved on.

But the third sat out on a bright spit of land surrounded by a spectacular bay, had an unserviced site on the grass right next to the playground and had a crab trap down on the dock which, when loaded up with ham, paid off within minutes every time. Wynne even caught this one on the top of the trap!

As we were spinning our heads trying to make sure the kids didn't fall off the dock into a pool of revenge-seeking crabs last night, I noticed a group of travelers unloading gear for an overnight trip out to camp on an island. Their film gear, a distinctive hat and a t-shirt jarred my memory, so I struck up a conversation. Turns out it was @go_van_com! They came by the Airstream this morning after a night on the island (but forgetting the firewood on the boat), and we had a great time running through common friends and destinations and letting our kids co-opt them into playing with ponies. Another Xplorer badge earned at the Citadel atop a hill overlooking the Halifax harbor. The lighthouse at Peggy's Cove. If you can maneuver your trailer through the tight streets of the cute little harbor town to this roundabout, you can take it just about anywhere! Makeshift walkways of wood and rocks lead out to ramshackle fishing shacks and a piecemeal dock. The narrow harbor's gray-blue rocks are trimmed with bright yellow seaweed. Yesterday we walked far out into the Lunenburg harbor on a spit of land only exposed at low tide. In addition to a great view of the waterfront, there were a few empty sea snail shells the girls couldn't do without. When we got home, we repopulated them with @sculpey_polyform oven bake clay. This is about 2/3 of the square footage we'll have in the house we're renovating in Petaluma.
