When your favorite expedition-ready orange food truck invites you to camp with them, you reroute the GPS.

And boy did it pay off. We arrived in the pitch black night and tucked into their double site. Ann got the exhausted kids to bed as I double chocked the wheels and dropped the nose as low as it could go to level. Within 10 minutes, we were by roaring fire with an IPA in hand and a few minutes later, Brad and Oksana emerged from @perkymog carrying two of their magical orange LeCrueset pots.

The last time we'd seen these pots, we'd been served beef stroganoff at a beach campsite in Ninilchik, Alaska after Oksana found out my Russian grandma used to make it for our family (and my mom still does). This time, we filled bowls with delicious Thai chicken with lemon grass and a lamb goulash. Best food truck ever!

Great to catch up, and while we had no idea what the site looked like in the dark, now that we see where we are, we might just have to stay the day and drive tonight with the kids asleep!

Leaving City of Rocks late this afternoon after deciding to spend the day scrambling on the rocks and hanging out with @perkymog found our various navigation tools locked in an epic disagreement. Google Maps wanted to send us south along a road we were pretty sure was dirt all the way down to I-80, and our usually adventurous Garmin insisted that we backtrack to a major freeway with our tails between our legs. The winner? In two years on the road, we'd probably pulled into camp after dark a total of about two times. On this blast across country, it's been the last four campsites in a row. The other night, Wynne called from her car seat "It's dark outside, and I'm still awake again. Am I nocturnal?"

Yesterday, our choice of a 4:30 pm departure plus 50 miles of dirt and 250 miles of highway meant we put the kids to sleep in the car after dinner and drove until we pulled into a BLM CG outside of Winnemucca around 10:30 (11:30 in the time zone we'd started in). Check out what's left of the bottoms of the girls' leggings after a full day of rock scrambling, and I think you'll know why it felt worth it to stick around and drive with them asleep.

Shorter day on the road today, but we did have one very important stop we had to make: Halloween costumes! For us, @inntowncampground recommended an awesome thrift store in Reno (@junkeereno) with everything we need to put together our Park Ranger and Sexy Bear costumes (Ann looks great in her hat and badge!), and for the kids, @sippeeskidsstore just across the street was stocked to the rafters with everything for the aspiring fairy.
