The Yellowhead Highway, BC

At Prince George, BC, we could have continued north to Dawson Creek and the start of the Alcan Highway, but we'll take this route on the way back down. Today, we turned west onto the Yellowhead Highway to connect (in a few days) with the more remote Cassiar Highway which the Alcan replaced in WWII amid fears that it was too close to the coast and thus vulnerable to a Japanese attack. Mae's car naps are lengthening (1:20 today, woo hoo!) which makes it a lot easier to cover a couple hours in the morning and then settle somewhere early. We zipped along laughing about a sign for "Chubb's Bible Camp" and listening to a CBC show about a support group for when your children decide to become Orthodox Jews called "Parents Of Religious Kids" (PORK). You know those town campgrounds that are just dirt lots with broken bottles everywhere with just a crappy picnic table right next to a rail yard or behind a buncha warehouse? Yeah, the one in Smithers, BC is *not* like that. Grass, flowers, awesome playground, on the river, full hookups, blazing wifi and a view of a snow capped mountain. Oh, and our neighbors just told us a moose walked through this morning! We're thinking we might be at the end of the good grocery stores for a while so spent the afternoon baking enough ground turkey and kale lasagna to fill the cast iron skillet, two loaf pans and a 9 x 9 brownie pan. We ate it for dinner, will keep one in the fridge for later in the week and will freeze 3 more meals worth. As soon as the kids are asleep, we'll make a big pot of chicken tortilla soup to give the same treatment.
